Welcome

Welcome to the Tax Rolls of Medieval Paris prototype website. This project aims to be a complete digital edition of the seven surving taille (tax) rolls that were levied on the citizens of Paris by King Philip IV between 1292-1300 and again in 1313. These documents provide a wealth of information about the individual people, demographics, and topography of the city.

How to Get Started

  • Browse the edited tax rolls. Currently, the most complete is the 1313 tax roll.
  • Information about the individual people mentioned in the rolls is found in the Personography.
  • View the Index for lists of occupations, given names, and toponyms.
  • Learn about the markup and editorial choices on the About page.
  • All of the source code and data for the project and edition is available at our GitHub repository.
  • View the Poster presented at the Association for Computing in the Humanities (ACH) conference in Pittsburgh, PA in July 2019.

Progress

For the 1313 taille roll, the first two quĂȘtes (administrative districts) of the St-Germain l'Auxerrois parish have been completed. For the 1296 and 1297 roles, currently only the first street, Rue St-HonorĂ©, has been completed. The remaining rolls (1292; 1298-1300) are currently unedited. See map below:
